Your community, your website

steve-bax-1-9.jpgWelcome to your community website powered by the Woking Informer. I'm the website editor Steve Bax and I'd like to invite you to be part of reporting the news.

In addition to stories from the paper appearing here, we're also looking for trustworthy individuals, groups, clubs, societies, and schools to become 'community correspondents'.

Tudor_lady2.jpgHistory will come alive at Woking Palace this weekend, with characters from the Tudor age performing on the site.

On September 13 and 14 the historical reenactment group Arriere-bans will be at the ruins of the palace in Old Woking, which will be open from 10am to 5pm as part of Heritage Open Days.

The Friends of Woking Palace will be on hand to show visitors around and there will be a display of artifacts dating back to Tudor times.

everest.jpgMarketing consultant Rhys Morton will be fulfilling a dream when he attempts to climb Mount Everest in two years time.

Rhys, 35, of Queen Elizabeth Way, Kingfield, was inspired to get to the summit after reaching the Mount Everest in May this year after 12 days of trekking to an altitude of 5.200m.

114 licence dodgers caught

tvdetectorvan.jpgTV detector equipment caught 114 people watching television without a licence in Woking between January and July.

They were among 209,000 licence dodgers caught nationally this year and risk a fine of up to £1,000.

TV Licensing spokeswoman Joanna Pearce said a powerful database shows exactly which properties are unlicensed, meaning enquiry officers can target addresses where they suspect people are watching TV illegally.

Future scientists could be encouraged by a holiday club held at New Life Church in Kingfield, Woking, this week.

The church was transformed into a science laboratory from Monday giving 140 children aged five to 11 an insight into the wonders of the modern world around them.

They enjoyed themed activities including hyperspeed games, test tube treats involving snack-making, 'wacky works' crafts and spotlight drama.

They also took part in the Bible Blast, where children entered into and acted out a story from the Bible and each day was based on a simple Bible verse.

Club organiser Matt Styles, children's worker, said more than 40 helpers from the church helped keep the fun going, many taking time off work.

He said: "It was loads of fun as always. I'm so grateful to everyone who helped."

A finale for the children and parents will be held at the church on Sunday, between 11am and 12 noon, followed by a barbeque.

Children who missed this year's holiday club can join the regular Kidz Klub at the church from September, which will be held once a month on Saturdays from 10am to 12 noon instead of Thursday evening.

For details call the church office, open 9am to 1pm, on 01483 725660.

ronnie_wood.jpgRolling Stone Ronnie Wood was spotted walking down Old Woking Road in the Byfleet/Pyrford area last week.

Starstruck passers-by stopped the rocker to chat and to take photographs, the Herald has heard.

Ronnie, 61, has been treated for drugs, alcohol, and sex addiction at the Life Works Community Centre in Old Woking, but made headlines recently when it was revealed he was cheating on wife Jo, 53, with a 20-year-old Russian, Ekaterina Ivanova.

Suzy Talbot: I am the Multimedia Content Manager for the Herald & News series. I have spent most of my career as a journalist working on newspapers in Buckinghamshire with a stint in Surrey. I hope to become increasingly involved all our communities because this is where the heart of our newspapers and websites lie. Feel free to contact me about any issue on 01932 561111.

Vicki Eltis: I am the chief reporter for the Herald & News series. A few of my contacts have called me the 'bulldog' as I like to get my teeth into a good story and never give up. I'm passionate about my job and covering the Walton, Weybridge, Hersham and surrounding areas. Please email me at vickieltis@trinitysouth.co.uk

Mark Goode: I am the reporter for the Staines, Laleham and Stanwell areas. I know the trees and rivers of Surrey very well, and have spent countless hours rambling through its woods. I am a poet, a nature lover, and a purveyor of fine old-time American music - including pre-war blues and Dixieland. Please email me at markgoode@trinitysouth.co.uk

Emma Heseltine: I'm the reporter dedicated to covering stories from Addlestone, Chertsey and Byfleet, and the surrounding villages. This is my first reporting job and I've been writing about the area since 2007. I grew up and still live in Addlestone, so I know the area well. Email me or call 01932 561111.

Adam Courtney: I am a senior reporter covering the Sunbury, Shepperton and Ashford areas. If you have a happy, funny, sad, tragic or positive story, any story, little or large, that you think people ought to know about, drop me an email or give me a call on 01932 561111.

Rupert Basham: I am the Walton/Weybridge & Hersham reporter. I studied American Studies at Portsmouth University, which was very interesting but left me with two options; to go into teaching or journalism. I figured with a name like Rupert, journalism was probably a safer bet (kids are cruel). Please call me on 01932 561111 or email me

Russell Butt: I am the dedicated reporter for Egham and I also cover Woking for our sister paper, the Informer. I joined the team in May 2008 after ditching a job in software sales. Initially I covered Staines & Ashford, but since July have been getting know the great people of Runnymede and mixing with the communities in Englefield Green, Thorpe and Virginia Water. I can't be everywhere at once though, so if you have some news you think I would be interested in email me or call 01932 561111.
